The Serra de Rodes is one of the most fascinating areas in the Alt Empordà, both for its historical value and its natural surroundings. Located between the sea and the first foothills of the Pyrenees, it forms part of the Cap de Creus Natural Park and offers a perfect blend of culture, scenery and hiking.
The Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes
The highlight of the mountain range is the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, one of the most remarkable Romanesque sites in Catalonia. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries, it stands more than 500 metres above sea level and offers spectacular views over the Gulf of Roses and Cape Creus.
During the visit you can explore the old cloisters, the church, the monastic rooms and the remains of the adjoining buildings. The interpretation centre also helps visitors understand its history and the life of the Benedictine monks who lived there for centuries.
Access is possible by car to the nearby car park or on foot along several marked trails.

Sant Salvador de Verdera Castle
Above the monastery, at the highest peak of the range, stands Sant Salvador de Verdera Castle. This medieval fortress once protected the monastery and served as a strategic lookout point against possible attacks from the sea.
Today only its walls remain, but the climb is well worth the effort, rewarding visitors with one of the finest panoramic views in the Alt Empordà: from Cap de Creus to the Pyrenees. The ascent from the monastery takes around 30–40 minutes and is well signposted.

Other places of interest
Close to the monastery you’ll find the Hermitage of Santa Helena de Rodes, with pre-Romanesque remains, and the abandoned village of Santa Creu de Rodes, where stone houses and walls can still be seen, once inhabited by farmers and craftsmen serving the monastery.
It is also worth visiting Port de la Selva or Vilajuïga, both ideal starting points for excursions in the area. The surroundings offer several hiking routes that combine heritage, nature and sea views.

Getting there and useful tips
- The most common access route is from Port de la Selva, along a road that climbs up to the monastery.
- The route can easily be combined with a visit to the Cap de Creus Natural Park or the Monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera, also in the Alt Empordà.
- It is advisable to wear comfortable footwear, bring water and use sun protection, especially during the summer months.
A perfect plan for history and nature lovers
The Serra de Rodes offers a complete experience: culture, unique views and peaceful trails in a Mediterranean setting. Whether you visit with family, as a couple or with friends, it is an unmissable excursion for those wishing to discover the medieval heritage and natural beauty of the Empordà.
