The previous post was about Halloween and in this edition we will explain you the catalan tradition that we have here instead of Halloween. We call it Castanyada, this name comes from castanya, chestnut. The Castanyada is a popular celebration hold the first of November, the All Saints Day. During that day, people in Spain use to go to the cemetery and put some flowers on the tombs of their relatives. After this activity, families and friends have a meeting during the afternoon where they eat chestnuts, panellets (little cakes) and sweet potatoes. As beverage we have muscatel. Today, most part of the catalan people just meet to eat together.
During this time of year you will find chestnuts sellers on the streets. They will offer you roasted chestnuts wrapped in newspapers in order to ensure the heat.
The panellets are small cakes. They are dressed with pine nuts, almonds, coconut, chocolate… You can find them in bakeries and pastries, but you can also cook it. Do you dare to cook it?
Which is the origin of this tradition? Some research confirm that some years ago people used to go to the church and ring the bells during all the night of All Saints. To stay awake and strong during the night, they used to eat chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and panellets.
Now that you know this Catalan tradition, you just have to come and enjoy it!
