La Volta Ciclista a Catalunya has happened, along the XX century, a symbol of Catalan nationalist sentiment. The Dark Age and lacking of freedoms still lit the urge to go out to cheer on the Catalan cyclists. However, La Volta has been celebrating every year, except in 1937 and 1938 due to the Civil War, and the next month it will celebrates its 93rd edition, the longest in the world after Il Giro d’Italia with 96 editions, and Le Tour de France with 100.
After the positive experience of 2012, with Calella as a hub of the 1st stage of La Volta, this year we repeat and the test will start and finish in Calella in its first stage, the 18th of March. Thus, through the streets of Calella will roll some today’s top cyclists, including Bradley Wiggins, winner of last year’s Tour de France and Joaquim «Purito» Rodriguez, Catalan and global best cyclist of the moment. This will be the fourth time that Calella hosts a finish stage, after having done so in 1963, 1964 and 2012.
The test also has, this year, two major changes. The first is the inclusion of an innovative step that will link the valleys of Camprodon and Port-Ainé, on March 21st. The two valleys dispose easy access via the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC railways). The second development is a tribute to the Tour de France which, as we have said before, this year celebrates its centenary.
This tribute consists of the establishment of a special award which will involve dispute a sprint at each stage, giving a maillot to the leader of the classification of these sprints. In addition, the delivery of the maillots will be in charge of different personalities of the history of the Tour.
