The Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The highlight of the mountain range is the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, one of the most remarkable Romanesque sites in Catalonia. Built between the 9th and 12th centuries, it stands more than 500 metres above sea level and offers spectacular views over the Gulf of Roses and Cape Creus. <\/span><\/p>\n

During the visit you can explore the old cloisters, the church, the monastic rooms and the remains of the adjoining buildings. The interpretation centre also helps visitors understand its history and the life of the Benedictine monks who lived there for centuries. <\/span><\/p>\n

Above the monastery, at the highest peak of the range, stands Sant Salvador de Verdera Castle. This medieval fortress once protected the monastery and served as a strategic lookout point against possible attacks from the sea. <\/span><\/p>\n

Today only its walls remain, but the climb is well worth the effort, rewarding visitors with one of the finest panoramic views in the Alt Empord\u00e0: from Cap de Creus to the Pyrenees. Close to the monastery you\u2019ll find the Hermitage of Santa Helena de Rodes, with pre-Romanesque remains, and the abandoned village of Santa Creu de Rodes, where stone houses and walls can still be seen, once inhabited by farmers and craftsmen serving the monastery.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is also worth visiting Port de la Selva or Vilaju\u00efga, both ideal starting points for excursions in the area.
