Giant Tradition in Catalonia is deeply rooted in our history, and we have to go back more than 600 years to find the first mention of giants and big heads during the Corpus Christi procession of Barcelona, in 1391. Just at that time, the young Calella had just received the letter that made it a town, granted by Viscount Bernat II of Cabrera in 1327. And this year, over 600 years later, the not so young Calella happens Ciutat Gegantera of Catalonia 2013.
I can assure you, as a Calella citizen, that the whole town is excited and keen to ensure that our guests from all over Catalonia and abroad feel home. We have not made a promotional video of the event, but two! One from the Colla de Geganters i Grallers de Calella and the other one from the City Council, and you can watch them both below.
It will be the weekend of 10th to 12th May. Friday afternoon fun begins with several parades, a reading of the opening concert and luxury performance to end the night by Els Catarres, Brams and Ebri Knight. And how much is the entrance fee? Nothing, is free! And no matter how late you’re going to bed that night because at 8.30 next morning you will wake up thanks to the blunderbuss shots of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Roser of Calella.
Here’s the full schedule of the weekend. In addition, throughout the month of May, there are in Calella several permanent acts:
- Photographic sample of Ciutat Gegantera contest (Old Town Hall). Support Photo-Film Calella.
- Collection of historical photographies of the 78 years of Gegants de Calella (Old Town Hall).
- Paper giant exhibition of the creative space IAKARE (Old Town Hall).
- Media space with interactive games on Gegants de Calella (Old Town Hall).
